Fewer marriages - stable divorce numbers

A total of 23 100 couples got married in 2011, a decrease of 450 compared to 2010. A total of 10 200 marriages were dissolved by divorce, and 11 200 couples were separated in 2011. The number of divorces has been at the same level for the last five years.

Registered partnerships 1993-2008. Marriages of two persons of the same sex. 2009-2011.

Marriages and registered partnership contracted, divorces and separations. 1975-2011.

Even though the number of marriages was lower in 2011 than it has been for the past four years, the figure of 23 100 marriages is still high. The number of divorces has been at the same level for the last five years. In 2011 there were 500 fewer separations than in 2010.

A total of 259 couples of the same sex were married in 2011, almost the same number as in 2010. Of these marriages, 93 were between two males and 166 between two females. Since 2009, which was the first year with the new Marriage Act and the opportunity to change partnerships to marriages, it is naturally that fewer people have changed their partnerships to a marriage. There were only 35 couples that changed their partnership to a marriage in 2011. In 2009 and 2010 there were respectively 658 and 68 partnerships changed to marriages.

In 2011, 56 partnerships were dissolved by separation and 54 partnerships were dissolved by divorce. 40 couples of the same sex were separated and 19 couples of the same sex were divorced in 2011.
