Fewer divorces in Norway

In 1995, 10,400 couples in Norway got divorced and 12,100 separated. This is 600 fewer divorces than in 1993 and 1994, although separations were up slightly. Compared to married and separated people in the population there were fewer divorces in most age groups over 25.

In 1995, 11.7 divorces per 1,000 existing marriages were registered. With the exception of 1986, this is the first time the ratio has fallen, after divorce began increasing in the 1960s. In the peak years of 1993 and 1994, the ratio was respectively 12.1 and 12.2. In 1986 there were 8.6 divorces per 1,000 marriages.
