I. Geography in text and figures

The Kingdom of Norway consists of the mainland, the archipelago of Svalbard and the island Jan Mayen.

The mainland consists of continental Norway and every island, islet and rock within the Norwegian baseline.

Svalbard consists of Bjørnøya, Spitsbergen, Nordaustlandet, Barentsøya, Edgeøya, Kong Karls Land, Hopen, Prins Karls Forland, Kvitøya and every island, islet and rock situated between 74° and 81° N. lattitude and between 10° and 35° E. longitude. By an international treaty (the Svalbard treaty), signed on 9 February 1920, Norway’s sovereignty over the archipelago was recognised. On 17 July 1925 the archipelago was officially incorporated into the Kingdom of Norway.

Jan Mayen is an island situated in the northern Atlantic. On 8 May 1929 it was placed under Norwegian sovereignty, and became by law of 27 February 1930 a part of the Kingdom of Norway.

The Antarctic islands Bouvetøya, Peter I Øy and Dronning Maud Land (20° W. and 45° E.) on the Antarctic continent are dependencies. They were placed under Norwegian sovereignty by law of 27 February 1930, parliamentary resolution of 23 April 1931 and royal announcement of 14 January 1939, respectively. The dependencies are not part of the Kingdom of Norway

1  New figures 2006 from the Norwegian Mapping Authority for "In the sea". The Norwegian Polar Research Institute has calculated the area figures for Svalbard, Jan Mayen and dependencies . The Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate has calculated the area of lakes.
2  The sea territory within the territorial limit.
3  The sea territory within the baseline.
4  The area between the baseline and 200 nautical miles (one nautical mile = 1 852 metres) is divided between the sea territory and the economic zone.
5  The sea territory between the baseline and the territorial limit is 12 nautical miles.
6  Norway's economic zone consists of the maritime zone between the territorial limit of 12 nautical miles and 200 nautical miles, but is limited to the border with neighbouring countries where the border line is further in than 200 nautical miles.
7  New figures for the fisheries protection zone around Svalbard will be provided when the territorial limit between Svalbard/Greenland has been set out in an agreement between the parties.
8  The sea territory between the territorial limit and the outer limit of the fisheries zone.
9  Area delineated by the 200 nautical miles zone between Norway, Svalbard and Russia.
10  Areas for regulated lakes are referring to highest regulated water level. The Norwegian Mapping and Cadastre Authority is currently calculating new area figures for islands and lakes.
11  Artificial lake. Reservoir for the Ulla-Førre hydroelectric power plants.
12  Also 520 km in Sweden (Klarälven - Gøta älv), making it the longest river in the Nordic countries.
13  360 kilometers incuding parts in Russia.
14  Including glacier at summit.
