1  This table underestimates the number of children living with step-siblings because of the absence of figures for cohabitant couples without common children in our register based statistics. According to the last population and housing census from 3 November 2001 there were 4 600 children living in this type of family. Figures from our register based statistics by 1 January 2002 show 4 200 children living with step-siblings in families where the adults either were married or had common children.
2  Children 0-17 years of age include only children 0-17 years of age who live at home. Children 0-17 years of age who are registered as having left the family home, who have married, or who have their own children, are excluded.
3  Children being the only child living at home.
4  Siblings living at home, at the same address as the child.
