Nearly half of all six-year-olds covered by educational programmes


Nearly 29,000, or 48 percent, of all six-year-olds in Norway were covered by school-based educational programmes in 1995, preliminary figures show. This is an increase of almost 5,550 children, or 24 percent, compared to 1994. There are large geographical differences in the availability of educational programmes for six-year-olds.

Altogether 1,294 schools had programmes for six-year-olds in 1995, compared to 1,051 in 1994. There are now educational programmes for six-year-olds in 274 of Norway's 435 municipalities.

On a countywise basis, Buskerud had the best coverage at 76 percent, followed by Akershus with 74 percent and Vestfold with 72 percent. Oppland ranked last with 13 percent, behind Nordland with 18 percent and Troms with 23 percent.
