Upturn in bankruptcy proceedings

A total of 1,060 bankruptcy proceedings were initiated in the first quarter of 1996, up three percent from first quarter 1995. The largest increase was seen in the building and construction industry.

Out of 1,060 bankruptcy proceedings 695 were business failures and 365 were personal bankruptcies. The ratio of business failures to personal bankruptcies was almost unchanged compared to first quarter 1995.
