In 1995 the number of foreign citizens in Norway dropped by 3,200 to 160,800. This is the first time a decline has been registered in the number of foreign citizens since the compilation of annual statistics began in 1975. The main reason for the reduction is that a record 11,800 foreign nationals acquired Norwegian citizenship last year. Consequently, the change in 1995 does not mean that there are fewer residents with a foreign background.
In 1995 the number of foreign citizens living in Norway went down for the first time in many years. The decline is attributed to the fact that more foreigners acquired Norwegian citizenship last year than at any time previously. At the turn of the year the foreign community in Norway totalled 160,800 persons.
