The gross cost of operating the 164 child care institutions registered in Norway in 1995 amounted to NOK 975 million. A bed in an institution cost an average of NOK 705,000 last year.
In 1995, Norway had a total of 164 child care institutions with altogether 1,406 places. These were divided among 24 homes for children, 63 youth's homes, 14 combined homes for children and youth, 12 institutions for parents and children (mother's homes), 15 residential work collectives, 23 acute ward institutions, and 14 other institutions for children and youth. Children's homes and youth's homes make up 61 per cent of all child care institutions. Many of these institutions have acute need places at their disposal in addition to more long-term placements in the child welfare system.
