Prices of crude oil and oil products slide

Norway's producer price index fell by 0.6 per cent from October to November in the wake of lower prices for crude oil and refined oil products. From November last year to November this year (the 12-month growth rate) the all-items index rose by 2.8 per cent.

Prices in the oil and gas sector dropped 4.9 per cent from October to November. Crude oil prices have risen sharply in recent months, but slid in November back to the September level. The average price for Brent Blend grade crude oil was about USD 22.50 per barrel in November. Figured in Norwegian kroner this works out to about NOK 143 based on the average exchange rate for the month.

Industrial producer prices as a whole fell 0.3 per cent from October to November, after increasing 0.4 per cent from September to October.

Annual change

Index figures for the period January-November this year indicate an annual growth rate for the total producer price index of slightly more than two per cent. Annual growth last year was 2.6 per cent. Because figures for December 1996 will not be available until January next year, there is some uncertainty as to the final annual growth rate.
