The average payment of wages and fees for women increased by 4.2 per cent in 1995, while the corresponding increase for men was 4.1 per cent. In monetary terms the increases were NOK 4,900 for women and NOK 7,120 for men. In 1995, men were paid an average of NOK 181,300, while women received NOK 119,600. The highest earning group is men aged 46 to 50, who were paid an average of NOK 247,900. Geographically speaking, people living in Akershus County and Oslo (Greater Oslo) topped the list with NOK 180,300 on average, while people in Northern Norway ranked last, with an average wage of NOK 135,500.
A total of NOK 370 billion was paid out in wages and fees in Norway in 1995, figures from the Directorate of Taxes' Wage and Tax Statement Register show. This is an increase of NOK 20 billion or 5.7 per cent compared to the year before. On average every person was paid NOK 152,000, which is an increase of 4.1 per cent from 1994. By comparison the wage increase per normal man-year increased 3.4 per cent in the same period.
More wage earners
A total of 2,434,000 people were paid wages and fees in 1995, 36,200 more than in 1994. Although more and more people are receiving such payments, the number of those doing so is dropping among people under the age of 25 and those over 60. The decline is the most pronounced among the young, who saw a 1.4 per cent drop in the age group 20 to 25. Among older people, the decline was 1.1 per cent in the age group over 60 years.
