Julie and Kristian top names in Norway


Kristian is once again the most popular name for boys in Norway, regaining its No. 1 position from Martin, the top choice of the past three years. Julie, the most popular name for girls last year, has been steadily climbing the list for many years, jumping from sixth place in 1995 to the top spot in 1996, with Ida, Marte and Karoline close behind.

Besides Julie, the names for girls that increased the most in popularity last year were Amalie, Ingrid, Malin and Anna. For boys, it was Sander, Mathias, Sebastian, Magnus and Tobias. Since 1991, Amalie, Julie, Ingrid, Emilie and Anna have made the greatest advances on the list, while for boys the names making the biggest strides have been Mathias, Markus, Sander, Jonas and Sebastian. Names that lost ground last year were Silje, Stine and Martine for girls, and Martin, Espen and Thomas for boys.
