Camping statistics, 1996:

Traffic at Norwegian campsites continues to decline

Norwegian campsites saw business decline for the sixth year in a row last year, with traffic decreasing 7.8 per cent from 1995 to 1996. Since 1990 the number of overnight stays has dropped by more than 20 per cent.
The number of overnight stays declined from 4.37 million in 1995 to 4.03 million in 1996. Both the number of Norwegian and foreign overnight stays dropped, declining by 8.6 and 6.8 per cent, respectively.

The number of Norwegian overnight stays went down from 2.30 million in 1995 to 2.09 million in 1996. By comparison, during the peak year of 1990, the number of overnight stays totalled nearly three million.

Germans by far make up the largest group of foreign tourists, but also here the numbers are down, from 948,000 overnight stays in 1995 to 852,000 in 1996. This represents a decline of 10 per cent. After falling for three straight years, the number of German overnight stays in 1996 was down 22 per cent from the top year in 1993.
