Highest excess of births since 1974


Norway's population increased by 22,000 in 1996, 1,200 more than in 1995, but somewhat less than in 1991-1994. Seventy-six per cent of the population increase in 1996 was due to the excess of births, which at 16,700 was the highest since 1974. Net immigration has sunk every year since 1993, and totalled 5,300 in 1996.
26,200 emigrated to Norway in 1996

Nearly 26,200 people emigrated to Norway last year. With the exception of 1993, when more than 31,000 people immigrated into Norway, the preliminary number of immigrants has varied between 25,200 and 26,300 since 1988. The number of people who emigrated from Norway increased by 1,300 to 20,900 last year. In each of the years after 1990 the preliminary number of emigrants has been under 20,000.
