More crime in south, decline in north

Finnmark in Northern Norway had the largest decline in the number of reported crimes in the first quarter of this year, with 30 per cent. The largest increase was seen in Oslo, the capital city, with 11 per cent.
The number of offenses reported in Norway went down by 1.5 per cent in the first quarter of this year compared to the same quarter last year. Finnmark reported the biggest drop, with 30 per cent, followed by Nord-Trøndelag and Troms with 27 and 26 per cent, respectively. The increase was the highest in Oslo, with 11 per cent, followed by Akershus (Greater Oslo), where reported crimes went up nine per cent. Buskerud, Vestfold, Aust-Agder and Rogaland also saw modest increases in reported offenses compared to the first quarter last year.

Fewer sex crimes

Sex crimes dropped by 26 per cent. This is mainly due to a decline in the number of reports concerning the distribution of indecent publications, with 77 cases reported compared to 307 in first quarter 1996. Reported rapes numbered 93 compared to 107 last year and there were 15 attempted rapes, compared to 25 during the same period last year.
