Norway increases trade with Africa

Exports to Africa increased by fully 16 per cent from the first quarter of last year to the first quarter of this year. Egypt is the largest recipient of Norwegian exports, while exports increased the most to Uganda. Exports to Uganda from Norway were 20 times higher compared to the first quarter of last year.
It now appears that Africa has assumed greater significance as a trading partner for Norway. Both 1995 and 1996 saw strong growth in imports from Africa, with increases of 14 and 20 per cent, respectively. In 1996, exports to Africa also increased, rising by 10 per cent following a decline of 15 per cent in 1995. In the first quarter of this year imports from Africa rose only 0.8 per cent to NOK 660 million, while exports increased by all of 16 per cent to NOK 340 million.
