Population statistics. Population 1 April 1997 and 1st quarter changes:
Population increases by 4,300 in 1st quarter
Norway's population increased by 4,300 to 4,397,000 in the three first
months of 1997, down from 4,900 during the same period last year. The reduced
growth is due to a higher number of deaths. Oslo, Akershus and Rogaland
accounted for all of 85 per cent of the population growth.
The population in all counties in Eastern Norway increased with the
exception of Hedmark, Oppland and Telemark. The Agder counties, Rogaland and
Hordaland also increased their numbers, while from Sogn og Fjordane northwards
the population declined, except for in Sør-Trøndelag.
A total of 15,200 children were born in the first quarter, about the same
as during the same period last year. There were 12,400 deaths, 700 more than
the year before. During the winter of 1996/97 the number of deaths were,
however, at the same level as one year previously.
