Foreign trade in fish and fish products, 1996:

Exports of herring and sprats increase the most last year


Exports of fish and fish products increased by about 12 per cent to NOK 1.8 million tons in 1996. The export value was NOK 22.4 billion, up also 12 per cent.
There was a large increase in exports of fresh, chilled and frozen herring and sprats. Their value increased by 76 per cent to NOK 2 billion, and the largest buyers were Poland and Russia.

Exports of farmed salmon totalled 214,000 tons, up 13 per cent from the previous year. Due to lower prices, the value was about the same as in 1996, accounting for 25 per cent of the total exports of fish and fish products. Denmark purchased 23 per cent of Norway's farmed salmon, and France bought 19 per cent.

The EU countries bought NOK 13.6 billion worth of fish and fish products from Norway last year, accounting for 62 per cent of the combined export value. Among EU countries, Denmark and France were the largest buyers, accounting for respectively NOK 2.4 billion and NOK 2.2 billion.
