At the end of 1996 the number of 24-hour residents of institutions for the elderly and disabled totalled around 43,700. This is an increase of nearly 1,200 persons compared to 1995. 1996 therefore marks a departure from the trend of recent years in which the number of residents in institutions has declined. Part of the growth can be explained by the fact that the number of institutions increased by 10 per cent during the same period. The greatest growth was seen in the age group 80 and up, while the changes in other groups were small.
After dropping steadily in the early 1990s, the number of 24-hour residents of institutions for the elderly and disabled in Norway increased by 1,200 persons from 1995 to 1996.
