17 per cent increase in Oslo and Bærum over the past year

Prices of existing homes rose by 9.6 per cent from first quarter 1996 to first quarter 1997, though with distinct regional differences. The price increase was the greatest in Oslo and the west side suburb of Bærum, with 17 per cent. The price difference between Oslo (including Bærum) and the rest of the country is now greater than at any time since the index was published for the first time in 1991.
In Oslo and Bærum prices for semi-detached and row houses increased by 18.9 per cent, while prices of apartments and single family homes rose respectively 16.9 and 14.9 per cent. The corresponding increases in Akershus (excluding Bærum), Stavanger, Bergen and Trondheim were about 10 per cent, while in the rest of the country it was 5.8 per cent.

The cities of Stavanger, Bergen and Trondheim make up a combined price zone and were in addition to Oslo and Bærum the only area where prices rose from fourth quarter 1996 to first quarter 1997. Prices here increased by 2.8 per cent while Oslo and Bærum had an increase of 4.5 per cent.
