From 1995 to 1996, total revenues of local governments increased by NOK 6.6 billion to NOK 157.7 billion, a 4.44 per cent improvement. The biggest contributor to the increase came from tax revenues. Overall tax revenues of municipalities and counties increased nearly NOK 5 billion and must be viewed in connection with higher employment in 1996. Fees also increased from NOK 24 to 25.6 billion, up 6.5 per cent.
Accounting figures for municipalities (local governments) and counties show that local governments ended up with a deficit before loan transactions of nearly NOK 1 billion in 1996. This is a NOK 1.6 billion improvement compared to earlier data based on preliminary accounting figures for a selection of municipalities. Compared to 1995 local government administration saw a NOK 0.5 billion decrease in results.
