Termination of pregnancy, 1996. Preliminary figures:

Second lowest abortion figures in 12 years

Preliminary figures show 14,370 terminations of pregnancies were performed in 1996. This is an increase of about 600 from 1995, but is still the second lowest figure registered in the last 12 years.
A total of 15,512 requests for termination of pregnancy were made in 1996. Of these 1,142 were rejected or withdrawn. Of the 14,370 terminations performed, 97 per cent were made within the statutory limits for abortion on demand, i.e. the request was made before the end of the 12th week of pregnancy. The remainder were granted following medical board deliberation.

The total number of abortions is an estimation of how many terminations of pregnancies 1,000 women will undergo in the course of their fertile period. The number is calculated on the basis of annual age-specific abortion rates and presupposes that no women die before the age of 50. This figure was highest in 1989 with 515 terminations of pregnancies per 1,000 women and lowest in 1995 with 444. In 1996 the number was 468.
