The goods and services surplus was NOK 3.7 billion in October 1997. The merchandise balance for October 1997 shows a surplus of NOK 4.8 billion, while the services balance shows a deficit of NOK 1.1 billion. In October 1996 the goods and services surplus was NOK 7.9 billion.
Preliminary figures show a current account surplus of NOK 1.4 billion in October 1997, down from NOK 5.4 billion in October 1996. The current account surplus for January to October 1997 came to NOK 48.5 billion, while it was NOK 60.9 billion for the same period in 1996.
The interest and transfers balance for October 1997 shows a deficit of NOK 2.3 billion, down from NOK 2.5 billion in October 1996.
Revaluation of assets and liabilities, mainly as the result of the current exchange fluctuations, yielded Norway a net gain of NOK 3.9 billion in October 1997. Preliminary figures show that Norway's net foreign assets increased by NOK 4.9 billion in October 1997, and were estimated at NOK 101.9 billion at the end of the month.
