The number of thefts from apartments, houses and cabins is the lowest registered in the 1990s. Reported robberies totalled 883, up seven per cent from the year before. Petty theft declined three per cent.
Reported thefts in Norway climbed seven per cent from 1996 to 1997, while aggravated thefts declined one per cent. Thefts from cafes and restaurants increased by 35 per cent, and thefts from shops rose 16 per cent. On the other hand, aggravated thefts from homes and cabins sank 11 per cent.
Total number of offences reported in 1997 came to 431,600, five per cent more than the previous year. Drug crimes increased the most, by 25 per cent. Petty narcotics offences increased the most, with use and possession of drugs increasing 34 per cent. Aggravated drug felonies went up 13 per cent. Reported violations of the working environment act increased 20 per cent. There was a 12 per cent increase in reported acts of vandalism, while reported sex crimes declined.
