In Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim and Stavanger, overnight stays in 1997 increased by 328,000 compared to 1996. The overall increase for Norway was 408,000 overnight stays. This means that the largest cities accounted for more than 80 per cent of the increase in overall business.
The number of overnight stays at Norwegian hotels increased three per cent in 1997, compared with 1996. In 1997, hotels had 15.7 million overnight stays, compared to 15.3 million in 1996. Business from the domestic market increased by 419,000 overnight stays in 1997, a four per cent increase. Foreign business declined slightly, by 11,000 overnight stays.

In 1997, the number of overnight stays by businesspeople increased by 390,000, from 4.3 million in 1996 to 4.7 million in 1997. Course and congress overnight stays increased by 37,000, while holiday and weekend overnight stays on the other hand declined by 20,000.
