The increase occurred in the domestic market, which saw Norwegian overnight stays rise from 651,000 in January 1997 to 713,000 in January 1998, a nine per cent increase. 1998 also ushered in the first January with more than one million overnight stays.
The number of overnight stays at Norwegian hotels grew five per cent from January 1997 to January 1998, increasing from 961,000 in January 1997 to 1.01 million in January 1998.
Decline in foreign business
Despite the increase, the number of foreign overnight stays declined five per cent, from 309,000 in January 1997 to 294,000 in January 1998. The biggest decrease was seen in Danish business, which was reduced from 167,000 to 146,000 overnight stays, a 13 per cent decline. Overnight stays by German travellers also dropped, declining from 27,000 in January 1997 to 24,000 in January 1998.
