The percentage of the holidaying population who travel to other Nordic countries has remained about stable and was 22 per cent in 1997. The growth in foreign holidays mainly applies to trips to countries outside Scandinavia.
More people in Norway are holidaying abroad. Fifty-eight per cent of holidaymakers went abroad in 1997. At the same time, fewer are holidaying in Norway. The impact of this is particularly evident in Western Norway and the inland counties of Eastern Norway.
In 1997, 42 per cent travelled to countries outside the Nordic countries, while the percentage was 34 per cent in 1994. The percentage holidaying in Norway has, however, declined, from 74 per cent in 1994 to 67 per cent in 1997. In Norway, the inland counties of Hedmark, Oppland and Buskerud and Western Norway are the most popular travel destinations, although both areas have lost market shares since 1994. The percentage of people holidaying in inland counties went down from 28 per cent in 1994 to 22 per cent in 1997 while the share holidaying in Western Norway declined from 23 to 19 per cent in the same period.
