Mortgages issued by state lending institutions and insurance companies amounted to NOK 63.6 million and NOK 23.1 million respectively by year-end. This is a decline of six per cent in 1996 for state lending institutions and 35 per cent for insurance companies. Some of the decrease for the insurance companies is, however, connected to the fact that a commercial bank took over the loan portfolio of one of the life insurance companies totalling approximately NOK 9 billion.
Home loans or mortgages issued by commercial banks, the Norwegian Post Bank and savings banks increased by 15 percent in 1996 and amounted to NOK 351.9 billion at the end of 1997. Compared to the previous quarter the increase was NOK 11.2 billion, or three per cent.
