The number of robberies is far higher than in the first quarter of previous years. The previous wave of robberies in the first quarter was in 1992 when 224 robberies and 60 aggravated robberies were reported.
Altogether 286 robberies were reported in the first quarter of 1998, against 194 in the same quarter last year. The number of aggravated robberies totalled 69, against 58 for the same period last year. Drug crimes also continued to climb in the first quarter of this year, by fully 26 per cent compared to the same period last year.
For drug crimes, the increase applied to both violations of the Medicinal Products Act and the penal code. Narcotics use offences were up 24 per cent, while possession of drugs climbed by all of 49 per cent compared to the first quarter of 1997. Drug trafficking offences rose 19 per cent and serious drug crimes increased by 24 per cent.
Reported cases of vandalism increased by fully 102 per cent compared to the same period last year. Counterfeit money in distribution accounted for 218 reports against 80 for the same period in 1997.
