Cultural statistics, 1997:

Most go to the cinema, fewest to the opera

Most Norwegians have been to the cinema and sports events in the past 12 months, while the fewest have attended an opera or operetta or a ballet or dance performance. While only one per cent have never been to the movies, as many as 62 per cent have never been to the opera or to a ballet or dance performance. Only attendance of classical concerts has increased since 1994.
The most popular form of culture is the cinema: 60 per cent of the Norwegian population aged 9-79 went to the movies in 1997. Sports events and public libraries rank second and third in terms of their drawing power, at 54 and 52 per cent respectively. This means that more than half the population make use of these offerings every year.

More than 40 per cent go to theatre performances (theatre, musicals or revues), museums and art exhibitions. Less than 40 per cent attend classical music concerts and pop music concerts. Eight per cent see ballet or dance performances in the course of the year, while six per cent attend opera or operetta performances.

Sports events are attended most often

If the cultural offerings are ranked by how many times the average Norwegian visits them in the course of the year, sports events top the list, with 6.2 visits. Next are public libraries, with 5 visits and cinemas, with 3.6 visits.

While there has been an increase in the percentage of users of most offerings between 1991 and 1994, only slight changes took place between 1994 and 1997. The only category to show a noticeable increase was classical concerts.
