We Haven't Drunk This Much Since 1987

In terms of pure alcohol, each Norwegian over 14 years of age drank more than 5.35 litres last year. This is the highest consumption rate since 1987. Wine and beer consumption has surged the most in recent years.

The total alcohol consumption last year was nearly 19 million litres, in terms of pure alcohol, of which 10.4 million litres were from beer, 4.5 million litres from wine and 3.8 million litres from hard liquor.

10.75 litres of wine each

Each inhabitant over 14 years of age drank an average 10.75 litres of wine last year. That's an increase of more than 1 litre from 1996. The total wine consumption was 37.9 million litres.

Measured in pure alcohol, wine consumption surged 14.3 per cent from 1996 to 1997 and constituted 23.9 per cent of the total alcohol consumption in Norway, as opposed to 22.3 per cent in 1996.

67 litres of beer per person

Beer consumption totalled 237.1 million litres last year, or 67 litres per inhabitant over 14 years of age. Consumption went up by 1.8 litres per person over 14 from 1996 to 1997. Of the total alcohol consumption in Norway, beer comprised 55.2 per cent in 1997 and 57.1 per cent in 1996.
