At the end of 1997 there were 184,000 children aged 0-5 enrolled in day-care centres. That is nearly 10 per cent, or 16,200 enrolments, more than in 1996.
Nationally, 66 per cent of kindergarten enrolments were full-time, i.e. for more than 31 hours a week. Oslo and Finnmark had the largest percentage of full-time enrolments, 91 and 88 per cent, respectively. The lowest enrolment rates were in Oppland and Vest-Agder with 34 and 45 per cent.
108,800 were in public Kindergartens
Of the 6,260 kindergartens in existence in 1997, 2971, or 47 per cent, were public institutions. Less than 108,000 children attended public kindergartens, which comprises 58 per cent of all children with day-care offerings.
More pre-school teachers
At the end of 1997 there were 51,800 employees in kindergartens. They worked 39,300 man-years. Twenty-nine per cent of all employees and 81 per cent of kindergarten managers and educational supervisors had certified pre-school-teacher training. This percentage has increased in recent years.
