4.6 million of the objects can be classified under cultural history and 450,000 under art history. In addition, the museums had nearly 7.5 million photographs in 1997. 68 percent of the objects were registered and/or catalogued. There are no formal requirements for the registration of objects, but at the very least a registration will include the inventory number, the name of the object and information about its origin.
Norwegian museums had custody over 22.8 million objects in 1997. In the last three years the number of objects has increased by 1.8 million. About half of these objects can be classified under natural history.
Fewer group visits
9.1 million people visited Norwegian museums in 1997. This is an increase of 270,000 compared with 1996 and 450,000 more than in 1994. The data indicates, however, a steadily decreasing percentage of group visits. Group visits constituted 44 percent of all guests in 1997, whereas that number was 52 percent in 1996 and 54 percent in 1994. 4.7 million paying visitors were registered in 1997, which amounts to 52 percent of all the guests.
Statistics Norway's culture and media use survey in 1997 indicated that 44 percent of those surveyed had been to a museum in the last 12 months. The percentage of men was somewhat greater than the percentage of women, 47 and 40 percent respectively. The data indicates that people with a higher education went to museums more often than those with less education. Those surveyed had gone to a museum an average of 1.1 times in the last 12 months.
