Norwegians made up 71.7 per cent or 2,265,008 of the passengers. The number of Norwegian passengers increased by 10.7 per cent in 1998, while foreign passengers increased by 1.7 per cent. The nationality breakdown shows that Danes and Germans made up 38.7 and 35.4 per cent respectively of the foreign passengers in 1998.
The number of ferry passengers from Norway to other countries increased by eight per cent from 1999 to 1998. This means that 3,158,802 passengers travelled abroad by ferry last year.
December 1998
A total of 192,265 passengers travelled abroad in December 1998. This is an increase of 17.5 per cent compared with December 1997. The number of Norwegian passengers increased by 21.2 per cent, from 136,393 passengers in 1997 to 165,147 passengers in this month. Norwegian passengers made up 86 per cent of all passengers in December. The number of foreign passengers was unchanged from the year before.
Swedes increased the most
A total of 5,770 Swedes departed from Norway in December. This is an increase of 56.3 per cent. Danes were still the dominant group of foreign passengers, with 15,215 or 56.1 per cent of all foreigners departing from Norway in December. This was nonetheless a decrease of 8.7 per cent compared with the same month last year. Germans also had a decline in the number of passengers, with 6.1 per cent to 4,383.
