Seamen paid according to the ordinary wage settlement had average earnings of NOK 18,000 in November 1998. This is NOK 1,300 or 7.8 per cent more than at the same time the year before. Total average monthly earnings were NOK 22,900, an increase of NOK 2,000 or 9.7 per cent.
Shipmasters had average monthly wages of NOK 20,200 in November 1998, an
increase of NOK 1,300 from the year before. Total monthly earnings for the same
group was NOK 25,800, an increase of NOK 2,500. Wages for machinists amounted
to NOK 19,700, an increase of NOK 1,400, with monthly earnings totalling NOK
25,500, an increase of NOK 2,300. Corresponding figures for ticket clerks were
wages of NOK 16,300 and monthly earnings of altogether NOK 20,800. This
represented an increase of NOK 1,300 in wages and NOK 2,000 in monthly
earnings.
Most of the positions show an average increase of NOK 300 from the year before
in overtime payments on weekdays and other allowances. Freetime compensation
varies from year to year, depending on employment by shipping companies and
when it is settled and paid out. In November 1998, freetime compensation
accounted for an average of NOK 1,960 for all seamen paid according to the
ordinary wage settlement. It varies from around NOK 700 for cooks to just over
NOK 4,700 on average per month for petty officers. Ticket clerks received just
over NOK 1,900 per month in freetime compensation.
