Previously, the Government was administratively responsible for all national roads. These roads were classified as “trunk roads” and “remaining national roads”. As from 1 January 2010, most of the “remaining national roads”, about 17 000 kilometres, were reclassified as provincial roads and thereby became an extended liability for the counties.
