Shares of immigrants among employees in establishments 2012

This report describes how the establishments’ shares of immigrants varies by industries, sectors, sizes and counties in the 4th quarter of 2012.

The average share of immigrants in establishments (with 10 employees or more) was 9.6 per cent in 2012. The share of these establishments having no immigrants among their employees was about 33 per cent in 2012. Since most of the establishments with no immigrants are amongst the smaller ones in the group, the share of employees working in such establishments was approximately 16 per cent in 2012

As the share of immigrants in the population has increased in the last few years it is no surprise that there has been an increase in the share of immigrants amongst the employees as well. Therefore, we have made an indicator showing the share of immigrants working in the establishment in relation to the share of immigrants living in the region of that establishment. If the share of immigrants working in the establishment equals the share of immigrants living in the region of that establishment, the indicator of immigrant representation is 100. If the indicator is higher than 100, it means that the establishment has a higher share of immigrants among their employees than the share living in the region where the establishment is located.

Using this indicator, we find that the representation of immigrants in 2012 increased from 95 in 2011 up to 96 in 2012. In 2008 the figure was 90. Separating the immigrant into two main groups based on country of origin we find that the representation of immigrants from EU, USA etc. was 108, while the same figure for immigrants from Asia, Africa etc. was 87. The representation of immigrants from EU, USA etc. has increased every year since 2008, while the figure for immigrants from Asia, Africa etc. has been steady. The representation of immigrants was highest in the establishments located in the counties Møre og Romsdal (110), Sogn og Fjordane (108) and Nordland (106), but several counties had indicators above 100. The establishments in Østfold and Vest-Agder had the lowest representation of immigrants in 2012 - both with indicators of 86. Among the municipalities of Oslo, Bergen and Trondheim, the establishments of Oslo has significantly higher shares of immigrants. However, when taking the share of immigrants living in the region into consideration, we find that the indicator is higher in Bergen (101) than in Oslo (91).
