Average monthly earnings up 2.7 per cent

Full-time employees in construction had average monthly earnings of NOK 34 100 as per 1 October 2009. This was a year-on-year increase of NOK 900, equivalent to 2.7 per cent.

The largest group of employees in construction is craft workers, who had average monthly earnings of NOK 31 500, a year-on-year growth of 2.6 per cent. Craft workers include numerous craft working professions and among these we find electricians, with average monthly earnings of NOK 32 200, a year-on-year increase of 5.9 per cent. In contrast, another craft working profession, woodworkers and cabinet-makers, had average monthly earnings of NOK 29 500, which constitutes a year-on-year growth of 1.4 per cent.

Publications of wage statistics in 2009 apply a new standard industrial classification (SIC2007). Wage statistics 2008/2009 presented here are thus according to the new standard.

About the statistical basis

The statistics are based on information from a sample of enterprises which cover a total of 60 966 full-time employees and 3 514 part-time employees. According to the Norwegian Central Register of Enterprises and Establishments as per October 2009, construction activities comprise in total 165 200 employees.

The term average monthly earnings is the main term in Statistics Norway's wage statistics. Monthly earnings cover basic salaries, variable additional allowances and bonuses. Payment for overtime work is not included but is presented in the statistics separately.

The method for measuring increases in monthly earnings differs somewhat from that of calculating increases in annual earnings. Monthly earnings are compared at a specific date each year, while changes in annual earnings are measured from one calendar year to the next. Estimated annual earnings for the current year are preliminary until wage statistics for the following year have been compiled.
