Average monthly earnings up NOK 2 000

Full-time employees in professional, scientific and technical activities had average monthly earnings of NOK 51 200 as per 1 September 2012, excluding overtime pay. This was a year-on-year increase of NOK 2 000 or 4.1 per cent.

This section in the standard industrial classification includes a wide range of activities, which are all characterised by a relatively high wage level. The highest earnings are found in engineering activities and related technical consultancy, at NOK 54 900, whereas the lowest are found in advertising and market research, at NOK 44 900.

About the statistical basis

The statistics are based on information from a sample of enterprises covering a total of 53 592 full-time employees and 6 445 part-time employees. According to the Norwegian Central Register of Enterprises and Establishments as per September 2012, professional, scientific and technical activities comprises in total 108 500 employees.

The term average monthly earnings is the main term in Statistics Norway's wage statistics. Monthly earnings cover basic salaries, variable additional allowances and bonuses. Payment for overtime work is not included, but is presented in the statistics separately. Basic salary is measured as per 1 September, while bonuses, variable additional allowances and payment for overtime work are calculated from the annual sum as a monthly average.
