Monthly earnings increased by NOK 1 200

The average monthly earnings for full-time employees in private health and social work activities were NOK 24 100 per 1 October 2003. This was an increase of NOK 1 200 or 5.4 per cent from 2002.

Health activities include hospital activities, medical practice and dental practice activities as well as physiotherapeutic treatment and day and night care. Included in social work activities are activities such as running institutions, day care, after-school programmes and leisure-time clubs as well as sheltered workshops and welfare organizations.

Health activities

Full-time employees in health activities had average monthly earnings of NOK 26 200, an increase of NOK 1 500 or 6.3 per cent from 2002. Of the professionals, doctors had monthly earnings of NOK 47 100. This was an increase of NOK 4 700 or 11 per cent from the previous year. Nurses had monthly earnings of NOK 25 500, an increase of NOK 900 or 3.9 per cent. By comparison state enrolled nurses had NOK 21 600 in monthly earnings. This was an increase of NOK 900 or 4.2 per cent from 2002.

Social work activities

Full-time employees in social work activities had average monthly earnings of NOK 22 900, an increase of NOK 1 100 or 5 per cent from 2002. Technicians and associate professionals had monthly earnings of NOK 23 900. This was an increase of NOK 1 400 or 6 per cent. By comparison full-time service workers and those in care-giving occupations had monthly earnings of NOK 19 400, an increase of NOK 600 or 3.1 per cent.

Annual earnings increased by 5.3 per cent

The estimated annual earnings are estimated by using information from wage statistics from two years and information from wage negotiations. Annual earnings include basic paid wages and salaries, variable additional allowances, bonuses and commissions and the like, but do not include payment for overtime work.

Full-time employees in private health and social work activities had annual earnings of NOK 285 700 in 2003, an increase of NOK 14 400 or 5.3 per cent from 2002. For employees in health activities annual earnings were NOK 310 000, an increase of NOK 17 000 or 5.8 per cent from October 2002. In social work activities average annual earnings were NOK 271 500, an increase of NOK 13 300 or 5.2 per cent.

About the statistical basis

The statistics are based on information from a sample of enterprises which cover a total of 18 426 full-time employees. According to preliminary figures from the National Accounts for the third quarter 2003, the statistics cover about 67 000 employees in private health and social work activities.
