Earnings in private health and social services1 October 2004

Wages up 2.6 per cent

Full-time employees in private health and social work activities had a 2.6 per cent increase in wages from October 2003 to October 2004. For employees in health activities the increase was 3.3 per cent while employees in social work activities had an increase of 2.4 per cent.

Health activities include hospital activities, medical practice and dental practice activities as well as physiotherapy treatment and day and night care. Social work activities include activities such as running institutions, day care, out-of-school care and youth clubs as well as sheltered workshops and welfare organisations.

Health activities

The monthly earnings of nurses in full-time employment were NOK 26 300, an increase of NOK 800 or 3.1 per cent. The monthly earnings of specialized nurses were NOK 28 900, an increase of NOK 400 or 1.3 per cent.

The monthly earnings of doctors were NOK 50 200, an increase of NOK 3 100 or 6.6 per cent from 2003.

The monthly earnings of state enrolled nurses in full-time employment were NOK 22 000, an increase of NOK 400 or 1.7 per cent from 2003.

Social work activities

A large part of employees in social work activities are child-care workers. This group had average monthly earnings of NOK 19 500 in 2004, an increase of 5.2 per cent from 2003.

State enrolled nurses and employees in other care occupations had average monthly earnings of NOK 21 700 and NOK 20 200 respectively. This is an increase of 0.5 and 2.7 per cent respectively.

Annual earnings increased by 3.2 per cent

Estimated annual earnings are calculated by use of information from wage statistics for 2003 and 2004 in addition to information from wage negotiations. Annual earnings include basic paid wages and salaries, variable additional allowances, bonuses and commissions etc, but not payment for overtime work.

The annual earnings of full-time employees in private health and social work activities were NOK 294 900 in 2004, an increase of NOK 9 200 or 3.2 per cent from 2003.

The annual earnings of full-time employees in health activities were NOK 322 300, an increase of NOK 12 100 or 3.9 per cent. Employees in social work activities had average annual earnings of NOK 279 600, an increase of NOK 8 200 or 3 per cent.

About the statistical basis

The statistics are based on information from a sample of enterprises with a total of 19 762 full-time employees. According to preliminary national accounts figures for the third quarter of 2004, the statistics cover approximately 67 400 employees in private health and social work activities.
