Wages up NOK 900
Full-time employees in hotels and restaurants had average monthly earnings, excluding overtime pay, of NOK 29 000 as per 1 October 2010. This was an increase of NOK 900 or 3.2 per cent from the same period in the previous year.
The section includes restaurants and bars and canteens and catering as well as hotels and camping sites and other provisions of short-stay accommodation.
Sale and service occupations up 3.6 per cent
The hotel and restaurant industry is dominated by employees in sales and service occupations. This includes cooks, waiters, head waiters and barkeepers. Average monthly earnings for chefs were NOK 28 500; a growth of 3.6 per cent from October 2009. Full-time waiters, head waiters and barkeepers had a wage growth of 2.5 per cent on a salary of NOK 24 600.
Full-time employees in occupations with no requirements for education had an average monthly salary of NOK 27 200. This was a wage growth of 3.0 per cent from 2009. This group includes among others, cleaners, maids and kitchen assistants.
The average monthly salary of managers in the hotel and restaurant business was NOK 37 700; an increase of 1.6 per cent from October 2009. Manager earnings are highest in the catering businesses. Management in this occupation had on average NOK 41 100 a month. The management in the occupation of accommodation had an average of NOK 39 500, while their colleagues in the restaurant business had NOK 36 000.
About the statistical basisWage statistics have counting point 1 October each year regardless of the timing of when results from wage settlements apply. This may affect wage changes in the wage statistics from 1 October 2009 to 1 October 2010. The statistics are based on a sample of firms covering a total of 14 832 full-time employees and 24 014 part-time employees. According to the Norwegian Central Register of Enterprises and Establishments as per October 2010, hotels and restaurants comprise in total 82 600 employees. The term average monthly earnings is the main term in Statistics Norway's wage statistics. Monthly earnings cover basic salaries, variable additional allowances and bonuses. Payment for overtime work is not included. |

Additional information
Structural changes within the division along with the outcome of collective bargaining would have a certain effect on the wage increase being measured.
