Machinery, ships, and oil platforms with largest increases in salary
The two divisions of machinery and equipment and ships, oil platforms and modules have experienced a larger increase in the number of employees than the average for manufacturing as a whole. Monthly earnings grew by 5.5 per cent, to NOK 35 100 in machinery and equipment, and by 5.3 per cent, to NOK 36 000 in ships, oil platforms and modules. Hence, the level of earnings in these industries is above average for manufacturing.
Craft workers constitute the largest occupational group in both these divisions, with about a fourth of the employees in machinery and equipment and half of the employees in ships, oil platforms and modules. The climb in monthly earnings for craft workers was 4.5 per cent in machinery and equipment and 2.8 per cent in ships, oil platforms and modules. Both divisions witnessed higher earnings growth for occupational groups with higher education, where technicians and associate professionals, such as engineers, had an increase of 7.3 per cent in machinery and equipment and 6.5 per cent in ships, oil platforms and modules. Earnings for professionals also increased markedly, by 5.7 per cent in machinery and equipment and 5 per cent in ships, oil platforms and modules.
Underlying wage increase at 7.6 per cent
Structural changes, as well as results from the wage negotiations, will influence the recorded changes in earnings. This includes, among other factors, changes in the employment pattern, working hours, and professions. The development of average earnings is also influenced by the wage increase and the number of employees who join and leave the work force in the particular group of industry, or switch to other industries. In this case it can be rather informative to look at the underlying wage increase or the increase in wages for identical full-time employees in the same profession and same enterprise two years in a row. In manufacturing we found that the estimated underlying wage increase was 7.6 per cent.
Estimated annual earnings at nearly NOK 400 000
Average estimated earnings of full-time employees in manufacturing in 2008 were estimated to be NOK 399 400, a 6.6 per cent increase from 2007. Estimated annual earnings are based on salaries 12 months a year, and holiday pay allowance is not included. Annual earnings cover basic salary, variable additional allowances and bonuses, but do not include overtime pay. For the calculation, information from two years of wage statistics are used as well as information from the wage negotiations. Estimated annual earnings for the current year are preliminary until wage statistics for the next year have been established.
About the statistical basisThe statistics are based on information from a sample of enterprises covering a total of 138 899 full-time employees and 13 240 part-time employees. According to preliminary figures from the National Accounts for the 3rd quarter of 2008, the statistics cover approximately 300 500 employees in manufacturing. The term average monthly earnings is the main term in Statistics Norway's wage statistics. Monthly earnings cover basic salaries, variable additional allowances and bonuses. Payment for overtime work is not included, but is present in the statistics separately. |

Additional information
Structural changes within the division along with the outcome of collective bargaining would have a certain effect on the wage increase being measured.
