Monthly earnings increased by NOK 2 900

By 1 October 2001, full-time employees in oil and gas extraction and mining had average monthly earnings of NOK 38 200. This was an increase of NOK 2 900 compared with October 2000.

Most employees in this industry group work in oil and gas extraction, where average monthly earnings were NOK 39 800. This is an increase of NOK 3 100 compared with the level the previous year. In comparison, full-time employees in mining had average monthly earnings of NOK 25 200, which was an increase of NOK 1 100 or 4.6 per cent from October 2000.

Oil and gas extraction

This field includes both activities and services concerning oil and gas extraction. Employees in this industry earn relatively high wages and most of them are full-time professionals (with at least four years of higher education) and technicians and associated professionals (in jobs requiring one to three years of higher education).

Professionals (employees with at least four years of higher education) comprise civil engineers, economists, senior advisers and geologists. These employees had average monthly earnings of NOK 45 000, a rise of NOK 2 800 or 6.6 per cent. Technicians and associated professionals (employees in jobs requiring one to three years of higher education) got average monthly earnings of NOK 38 400, an increase of NOK 2 200 or 6 per cent. Craft and related workers, machine operators and drivers, who constitute a relatively large occupational group, obtained monthly earnings of NOK 34 900, an increase of NOK 3 100 or 9.9 per cent. Senior officials and managers had monthly earnings of NOK 60 300, an increase by NOK 5 300 or 9.7 per cent.

Mining

Most employees in mining are craft and related trade workers, machine operators and drivers. This occupational group had average monthly earnings of NOK 24 000, which corresponds to an increase of NOK 1 300 or 5.7 per cent from the year before. Senior officials and managers had monthly earnings of NOK 38 300, an increase of NOK 2 400 or 6.5 per cent.

Estimated annual earnings increased by 8.6 per cent

Full-time employees in oil and gas extraction and mining had estimated average annual earnings of NOK 455 000 in 2001, an increase of NOK 36 000 or 8.6 per cent from 2000. Employees in oil and gas extraction got estimated average annual earnings of NOK 474 000, an increase of 8.8 per cent from 2000, and employees in mining received estimated average earnings of NOK 304 000, an increase of 5.4 per cent.

Estimated annual earnings are based on reported wage information as of 1 October each year and include basic paid salary, variable additional allowances as well as bonuses and commissions, etc., but do not include payment for overtime work. Figures from two years of wage statistics are used in the calculations in addition to information from completed wage negotiations. The figures for estimated annual earnings for the current year are preliminary until wage statistics for the next year have been established. For more information see "About the statistics".

About the statistical basis

The statistics are based on information from a sample of enterprises which cover a total of 20 766 full-time employees and 868 part time employees. According to preliminary figures from the national accounts from the third quarter of 2001, the statistics cover around 27 600 employees in oil and gas extraction and mining.
