Close to 7 per cent wage increase in oil business

Full-time employees in oil and gas extraction had average monthly earnings of NOK 48 800 per October 2006, an increase of NOK 3 200 or 6.9 per cent from the previous year.

Machine operators, the dominating occupational group in oil and gas extraction, had average monthly earnings of NOK 42 000 by October 2006. This constituted an increase of NOK 2 000 or 5.1 per cent from the year before. Craftsmen, on the other hand, increased their average monthly earnings with NOK 3 400 or 9.4 per cent in the same period.

Professionals and technicians and associate professionals in the oil sector had average monthly earnings of NOK 53 200 and NOK 48 100 in 2006, constituting increases of NOK 2 600 and NOK 3 800 from 2005. Senior officials and managers in the industry increased their monthly earnings by NOK 7 500 to NOK 75 000, 11.2 per cent more than the previous year.

Mining

Similar to oil and gas extraction, machine operators is a large occupational group in the mining industry. In mining however this group increased their monthly earnings by only NOK 800, to a level of NOK 28 100 in 2006. Craftsmen increased their monthly earnings by NOK 600 up to NOK 29 900.

About the statistical basis

The statistics are based on information from a sample of enterprises with a total of 31 494 full-time employees. According to preliminary figures from the national accounts for the third quarter of 2006, the statistics cover approximately 36 800 employees in oil and gas extraction and mining.
