Wages up NOK 4 500 in the oil industry

Full-time employees in the oil and gas extraction industry had average monthly earnings of NOK 58 800 as of 1 October 2009. This was a year-on-year increase of 8.3 per cent, or NOK 4 500.

A substantial part of the increase in monthly wages is due to the rise of paid bonuses, which escalated from NOK 1 700 in 2008 to NOK 3 000 in 2009. Basic salaries, in contrast, grew by 6.1 per cent in the same period.

Oil and gas extraction

The largest occupational group consists of drill floor crews, process technicians, and other operators, and they have average monthly earnings of NOK 50 100, which was a climb of NOK 3 500, or 7.5 per cent.

Professionals and associate professionals had average monthly wages of NOK 65 800 and NOK 55 800 respectively. For the professionals, this was a boom of 10.8 per cent, for the associate professionals the rise was 6.9 per cent. The occupational group of professionals includes, among other things, chartered engineers, Masters of Science in Business and Economics, and geologists, whereas the associate professionals are for instance engineers and technicians.

Mining

Full-time employees in mining had average monthly wages of NOK 35 700, up 2.6 per cent. As in the oil and gas industry, operators constitute a large proportion of the workforce, and their wages as of 1 October 2009 were NOK 32 200, edging up year-on-year 0.6 per cent. In comparison, craft workers had wages of 34 400, up 4.2 per cent.

Average annual earnings

Full-time employees had estimated annual earnings of NOK 669 500 in the oil and gas industry, and NOK 424 300 in the mining industry.

Publications of wage statistics in 2009 apply a new standard industrial classification (SIC2007). Wage statistics 2008/2009 presented here are thus according to the new standard.

About the statistical basis

The statistics are based on information from a sample of enterprises covering a total of 35 452 full-time employees. According to the Norwegian Central Register of Enterprises and Establishments as per September 2009, oil and gas extraction and mining comprises in total 42 900 employees.

The term average monthly earnings is the main term in Statistics Norway's wage statistics. Monthly earnings cover basic salaries, variable additional allowances and bonuses. Payment for overtime work is not included, but is presented in the statistics separately. Basic salary is measured as per 1 September, while bonuses, variable additional allowances and payment for overtime work are calculated from the annual sum as a monthly average.

The procedure of measuring increases in monthly earnings differs somewhat from that of calculating increases in annual earnings. Monthly earnings are compared at a specific date each year, while changes in annual earnings are measured from one calendar year to the next. The calculation of annual earnings is based on information from both the current and previous year, as well as information from the quarterly wage indices. Estimated annual earnings for the current year are preliminary until wage statistics for the following year have been compiled.
