Annual earnings increased by 5.6 per cent

Estimated average annual earnings for full-time employees in private education were NOK 318,000 in 2002. This was an increase of just under NOK 17,000 or 5.6 per cent from 2001.

Employees in private higher education had the highest wages. They received almost NOK 359,000 per year, which was an increase of NOK 17,000 or 4.4 per cent from 2001. Employees in private secondary education and adult education earned NOK 327,000 and 295,000 respectively. For both groups this corresponded to an increase in annual earnings of 5.8 per cent from 2001. In comparison, employees in private primary schools had estimated annual earnings of NOK 276,000, which is an increase of NOK 16,000 or 6.2 per cent.

The estimated annual earnings are based on the assumption that salaries are paid for 12 months of the year. Holiday pay supplements are thus not included. Annual earnings include basic paid wages and salaries, variable additional allowances, bonuses and commissions and the like. Overtime pay and other benefits are not included. When estimating annual earnings, information from the annual wages statistics at 1 October, for at least two years back, is utilized. The figures for 2002 are preliminary until the wages statistics at 1 October 2003 is published.

Average monthly earnings increased by NOK 1,400

Monthly earnings are the major notion in wages statistics. Monthly earnings include basic paid salaries, variable additional allowances and bonuses, commissions and the like. As with the annual earnings, overtime pay and other benefits are not included. The percentage increase in monthly earnings can differ some from that of the annual earnings. This is because monthly earnings are calculated every 1 October, while annual earnings are compared from one calendar year to the next.

Full-time employees in private education experienced a growth in monthly earnings of about NOK 1,400, which was a 5.7 per cent increase from 2001. Employees in private primary schools had monthly earnings of NOK 23,300 at 1 October 2002. This was almost NOK 1,400 or 6.1 per cent more than at the same time 2001.Employees in private secondary education had monthly earnings of NOK 27,600, which was a 5.7 per cent increase. Those employed in the education of adults received NOK 24,900, an increase of NOK 1,400 or 6.1 per cent.

Increase in monthly earnings by 4.5 per cent for teaching staff

Teachers had average monthly earnings of NOK 27,300, up NOK 1,200 or 4.5 per cent from 2001. In comparison, employees in offices, sales and services had monthly earnings of NOK 21,600. This was a 6 per cent increase from 2001. Teachers in private secondary education received just over NOK 28,000, which is NOK 1,500 or 5.6 per cent more than the previous year. Teachers in private primary schools had NOK 23,600, an increase of NOK 1,700 or 7.6 per cent.

About the statistical basis

The statistics are based on a sample of enterprises in private education with 4,384 full-time and 2,034 part-time employees. According to preliminary figures from the National Accounts for the third quarter 2002, the statistics cover 15,700 employees in private education.

Some of the tables presented here are less detailed than corresponding tables of previous years. This has to do with the implementation of the NOS Standard Classification of Occupations.
