New standard industrial classification

Publications of wage statistics in 2009 apply a new standard industrial classification ( SIC2007 ). Wage statistics 2008/2009 presented here are thus according to the new standard.

About the statistical basis

Wage statistics have 1 October as the reference date each year, regardless of when results from wage settlements apply. This may affect wage changes in the wage statistics from 1 October 2008 to 1 October 2009.

The statistics are based on a sample of enterprises in division P, ‘Education’ , in accordance with NACE Rev. 2, with a total of 5 768 full-time employees and 3 739 part-time employees. According to preliminary figures from the national accounts, the statistics cover approximately 17 700 employees as of October 2009.

The term average monthly earnings is the main term in Statistics Norway's wage statistics. Monthly earnings cover basic salaries, variable additional allowances and bonuses. Payment for overtime work is not included. The rise in monthly earnings differs somewhat from the growth in annual salary as monthly salaries are compared on a selected date, 1 October each year, while the comparison of annual salary measures changes between calendar years.

Annual salary is calculated using information from at least two years of wage statistics, and the use of quarterly wage indices, as well as information from wage negotiations. Estimated annual wage measures the average level of wages for an entire calendar year. Wages includes monthly salary where overtime compensation is not included. The figures for annual salary for 2009 are preliminary and will become final when the wage statistics are released for 2010.
