Monthly earnings increased by NOK 700

Average monthly earnings for full-time employees in transport and communication came to NOK 27 600 per 1 October 2003 - an increase of NOK 700 or 2.7 per cent from 2002.

The section transport and communications consists of the divisions land transport, water transport, air transport, supporting and auxiliary transport activities and activities of travel agencies and post and telecommunications.

Land transport

Monthly earnings for employees in land transport amounted to NOK 23 600, an increase of NOK 300 or 1.5 per cent. Land transport comprises scheduled road- and other passenger transport, and goods transport by road. Scheduled road- and other passenger transport also covers railways, trams, underground, taxis and the like.

Average monthly earnings for full-time employees in scheduled road- and other passenger transport came to NOK 23 100 at 1 October 2003. This was a growth of NOK 400 or 1.8 per cent from 2002. The largest group of all full-time employees in scheduled road- and other passenger transport are drivers. The average monthly earnings of this group amounted to NOK 21 600, an increase of NOK 300 or 1.5 per cent.

For all employees in goods transport, monthly earnings averaged NOK 24 100, a rise of NOK 400 or 1.7 per cent. Drivers had average monthly earnings of NOK 23 500. This was an increase of NOK 700 or 3.1 per cent.

Water transport

Average monthly earnings for full-time employees in water transport were NOK 30 900 per 1 October 2003 - up NOK 1 100 or 3.5 per cent from 2002.

Air transport

Monthly earnings for employees in air transport averaged NOK 35 500, a growth equivalent to NOK 800 or 2.4 per cent. Technicians and associate professionals, e.g. aircraft technicians and pilots, averaged NOK 46 500, an increase of NOK 2 900 or 6.7 per cent.

Supporting and auxiliary transport activities and activities of travel agencies

Monthly earnings for full-time employees in activities of travel agencies, tour operators and tourist assistance activities came to NOK 25 300, a growth of NOK 600 or 2.6 per cent. In comparison, the monthly earnings of employees in cargo handling, storage, other supporting transport activities and activities of other transport agencies were NOK 27 500. This is equivalent to a growth of NOK 1 000 or 3.6 per cent.

Post and telecommunications

Full-time employees in this group had monthly earnings of NOK 29 400 - an increase of NOK 900 or 3.1 per cent. More than 60 per cent of all employees in post and telecommunications are clerks. This group of employees received NOK 22 500 on the average, an increase of NOK 700 or 3.1 per cent.

Annual earnings increased by 4.4 per cent

The estimated annual earnings are estimated using information from wage statistics from at least two years, information from wage negotiations and the quarterly wage index. The quarterly wage index is used to distribute the increase in wages throughout the year.

Employees in air transport received average annual earnings of NOK 425 400. This was an increase of NOK 12 300 or 3.0 per cent from 2002. In comparison, annual earnings for employees in land transport were NOK 282 600. This was an increase of NOK 9 200 or 3.3 per cent.

About the statistical basis

The statistics are based on a sample of enterprises with 70 786 full-time employees. According to preliminary figures from the National Accounts for the third quarter 2003 the statistics cover about 177 400 employees in transport and communication.
