Earnings in the education system, 1 October 2003

Monthly earnings are calculated for all employees, full-time as well as part-time employees. By calculating full-time equivalents, the salaries of part-time employees may be compared with those of full-time employees.

Full-time employees

Monthly earnings for full-time employees were about NOK 29 500 per October 2003 - an increase of NOK 700 or 2.5 per cent from 2002. Female employees working full-time had monthly earnings of NOK 28 900 - NOK 700 or 2.6 per cent more than the previous year. By comparison monthly earnings for full-time male employees were NOK 30 300 - an increase of NOK

700 or 2.3 per cent.

About one third of all employees work in primary schools. Their monthly earnings averaged at NOK 28 700, an increase of NOK 800 or 2.9 per cent from the previous year. Employees in upper secondary schools had the highest wages: NOK 31 200 - an increase of NOK 600 or 2 per cent from 2002. For employees in lower secondary schools monthly earnings were NOK 29 200. This corresponds to an increase of NOK 600 or 2.2 per cent.

Part-time employees

Monthly earnings for part-time employees were about NOK 28 200 per October 2003 - an increase of NOK 600 or 2.3 per cent from 2002. Female employees working part-time had monthly earnings of NOK 27 900 - NOK 600 or 2.3 per cent more than the previous year. By comparison monthly earnings for part-time male employees were NOK 29 200 - an increase of NOK 600 or 2 per cent from 2002.

About the statistical basis

The statistics are based on preliminary information on 101 625 employees in publicly maintained schools reported to the Central Register of Government Employees in the School System per 1 October 2003.

The wage settlement in the spring of 2003 for publicly maintained schools came to the conclusion that no wage increase should be given for 2003. However, the results from the local negotiations from September 2002 - 2.0 per cent was set aside for these negotiations - were not included in the data material until 2003.
