Average monthly earnings up NOK 1 800

Full-time employees in health enterprises had average monthly earnings of NOK 36 200, overtime pay excluded, on 1 October 2008. This represents a year-on-year growth of NOK 1 800, or 5.3 per cent

The wage statistics measure wage levels on 1 October, irrespective of the time of the wage settlement. This might influence the wage changes recorded by the survey, as the results of the wage settlements are reached at different dates in different years.

The majority of the employees in the health enterprises are nurses, physicians, or auxiliary nurses, and about two thirds of the full-time employees are women.

11.6 per cent growth for auxiliary nurses

Full-time employed auxiliary nurses had average monthly earnings of NOK 28 400, which constituted a growth of 11.6 per cent, or NOK 3 000. Another marked development trait for this occupation group is a decrease in the number of full-time employees, from about 5 500 in 2005 to 4 100 in 2008.

Social educators, who among other things rehabilitate patients with physical and social disabilities, saw an upturn in average monthly earnings of 8.9 per cent. Broken down by gender we find that female social educators had an increase of 9 per cent, to NOK 32 800, and male social educators an increase of 8.7 per cent, to NOK 33 500.

Physicians edge up 1.3 per cent

Average monthly earnings for physicians were NOK 58 100, up 1.3 per cent. Due to changes in the reporting and accounting routines of some of the health enterprises, basic salaries shot up by 11 per cent, whereas variable additional allowances plummeted by 27 per cent. Over-time pay decreased by about NOK 200.

Half of the employees work part-time

Earnings for part-time employees, in full-time equivalents, increased somewhat more percentage wise than for full-time employees. In 2007 part-time employees earned 90 per cent of what full-time employees earned. In 2008 the corresponding number was 94 per cent. Half of all employees in the health enterprises work part-time, and of the part-time employees nine tenths are women.

About the statistical basis

The statistics are based on information from state hospitals in all health regions, and include all employees.

Monthly earnings include basic salaries and fixed and variable additional allowances. Payment for overtime work is not included.
